Anthony Davis and AJ Dybantsa Lead Wizards Past Magic 103-94 as Orlando Falls to 0-4 at Home a Night After Losing to Boston

The Orlando Magic are still looking for their first home win of the season. Anthony Davis scored 27 points, rookie AJ Dybantsa added 21 in his third NBA game and the Washington Wizards beat the short-handed Magic 103-94 on Monday night at Kia Center, Orlando's fourth straight loss on its home floor.
Franz Wagner led Orlando with 24 points and Desmond Bane scored 20, but the Magic went 11 for 39 from 3-point range and scored just nine points in the third quarter. Orlando fell to 2-5, all four home games losses, one night after a 108-97 home loss to the Boston Celtics. Washington improved to 4-3.
The Magic played again without Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs, and rested Anthony Black on the second night of the back-to-back.
How the Wizards took over
Orlando started well, making four of its first five 3-pointers and building a nine-point lead early in the second quarter, and it led 33-28 after one. Washington answered with a 13-2 run in which Trae Young scored 10 points, and the Wizards won the second quarter 32-26 to lead 60-59 at halftime.
The game turned in the third. The Magic were outscored 19-9 in the period, and Young's layup capped an 8-0 burst that sent Washington into the fourth with a 79-68 lead, its largest of the night. Orlando won the fourth quarter 26-24, not nearly enough to erase the deficit.
The Wizards shot 53% from the field (40 of 75), had 21 fast-break points to Orlando's nine and scored 22 points off the Magic's 18 turnovers. Washington also had 10 steals and assisted on 26 of its 40 baskets. Orlando's 3-point shooting, 28.2% after the hot start, sank it.
Davis, Dybantsa and Young
Davis made 12 of 17 shots and finished with 27 points, nine rebounds and four steals in 34 minutes, according to the ESPN box score. (The Associated Press recap credited him with 29 points and eight rebounds; the box score's shooting line adds up to 27.) Kyshawn George scored 22 on 9-of-15 shooting with four 3-pointers, and Young added 15 points and nine assists.
Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, scored 21 on 7-of-17 shooting and made all six of his free throws. He missed the first four games of the season with a sprained ankle, then scored 19 in his debut at Cleveland on Oct. 28 and 17 in his home debut against Charlotte two nights later, giving him 57 points in three games. Washington won without center Alex Sarr, who had started the team's first six games and sat with a sore knee.
Orlando's injury problem
Wagner shot 10 of 18 and added six assists, and Bane hit four 3-pointers. Jamal Cain and Tristan da Silva each scored 10, though da Silva went 4 for 14. Wendell Carter Jr. had nine rebounds.
The absences are piling up. Banchero, out with a high-ankle sprain, missed his fifth straight game, and Suggs, out with a knee injury, missed his fourth straight. Black, who played 33 minutes and scored 23 points against Boston on Sunday, was held out as a precaution. ESPN's injury report also listed Jonathan Isaac (knee) and Noah Penda (hamstring) as out.
Sunday's loss to Boston
The Washington game capped a two-day homestand that began with a 108-97 loss to the Celtics on Sunday afternoon, Boston's fifth straight win. With Banchero out, the Celtics keyed on Wagner, who scored 14 points on 5-of-20 shooting but handed out a career-high 12 assists. Black and da Silva carried the scoring with 23 points each; Black made 10 of 11 free throws and da Silva hit five 3-pointers.
Boston built a 15-point lead by holding Orlando scoreless over the first four minutes of the second half. The Magic answered with a 12-0 run, fueled by three of da Silva's 3-pointers, to trail just 77-74 entering the fourth. Early in the final period, Black picked off a Paul George outlet pass and finished a three-point play to tie the game at 79, but Wagner missed a layup on the next possession that would have given Orlando the lead.
Jayson Tatum closed the door. He scored 32 points, 15 of them on 15-of-17 free-throw shooting, while the Magic attempted 19 free throws as a team. Tatum briefly left late in the first quarter, bleeding after the back of his head collided with Jamal Cain's forehead, and returned with 6:13 left in the first half. George's 3-pointer with 1:32 left put Boston up 11, and center Neemias Queta added two late blocks.
What the two losses had in common
The homestand exposed the same weaknesses twice. Orlando committed 18 turnovers in each game, and Boston and Washington turned them into 21 and 22 points. The Magic took 39 3-pointers both nights, making 14 against the Celtics and 11 against the Wizards. And both opponents pulled away with a decisive run, Boston to open the second half and Washington late in the third quarter.
A slow start at home
Orlando has won only on the road so far. The Magic's results this season:
| Date | Opponent | Site | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 21 | Atlanta | Home | Lost 132-125 |
| Oct. 23 | Minnesota | Home | Lost 115-93 |
| Oct. 25 | New York | Away | Won 111-102 |
| Oct. 28 | Toronto | Away | Lost 129-99 |
| Oct. 30 | Toronto | Away | Won 121-114 |
| Nov. 1 | Boston | Home | Lost 108-97 |
| Nov. 2 | Washington | Home | Lost 103-94 |
The Magic are fourth in the Southeast Division. The Miami Heat, who lost 138-117 to the Lakers on Monday, are in the middle of their own West Coast trip.
What's next
Orlando leaves home for a four-game Western swing: at Phoenix on Thursday at 9 p.m., at Golden State on Saturday, at Sacramento on Tuesday, Nov. 10, and at Utah on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Washington hosts the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.
The road has been kinder to the Magic, who are 2-1 away from Kia Center. Whether they can get healthier before they return home will shape how quickly they climb out of the early hole.
