Desmond Bane scored a season-best 28 points, Franz Wagner set season highs with 26 points and 11 assists, and the Orlando Magic beat the Toronto Raptors 121-114 in NBA Cup group play Friday night, Oct. 30, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The win came two nights after the Raptors routed Orlando 129-99 in the same building, and it lifted the Magic to 2-3 while Paolo Banchero remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

Orlando withstood a career night from Scottie Barnes, who scored 41 points before fouling out, and pulled away late with a 13-4 run after Toronto briefly took the lead early in the fourth quarter.

A different team from Wednesday

Wednesday's opener of the two-game set was one-sided. Barnes scored 28 points and RJ Barrett added 25 as Toronto won 129-99, the AP reported. Reserve forward Tristan da Silva led Orlando with 20 points that night, and Wagner was held to 15 points and five assists. Ja'Kobe Walter started in Leonard's place and scored 14, and backup point guard Jamal Shead added 13 points and seven assists.

The turnaround from Wednesday started at the 3-point line. After going 10 of 35 from deep in the 30-point loss, the Magic made 18 of 34 attempts on Friday, according to the AP. Bane made his first four 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the first quarter as Orlando built a 31-27 lead, WFTV reported.

The Magic shot better than 50% in the second quarter, with Wagner scoring 10 points in the period, and led 64-55 at halftime. Orlando went up by as many as 12 in the third quarter and carried a 95-88 lead into the fourth.

How Orlando closed it

Toronto opened the fourth on a run and took its first lead since the opening quarter, 102-100, on an Immanuel Quickley 3-pointer with 8:38 remaining, the AP reported. Anthony Black answered with a 3-pointer with 6:56 left, the first points of a 13-4 Magic spurt that decided the game.

Bane scored six points in the fourth quarter and Wagner added five, according to WFTV. The Magic also lived at the free-throw line, going 25 of 29 compared with Toronto's 11 of 15. Bane was 6 for 6 and Wagner 8 for 9 at the line, and Wendell Carter Jr. made 7 of 8.

Orlando led for 91% of the game, according to the ESPN box score, and shot 53% from the field.

Jamal Cain gave Orlando a lift off the bench, making all five of his shots, including three 3-pointers, in 15 minutes. Jakob Poeltl had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Toronto.

Barnes' career night not enough

Barnes scored his first 40-point game, finishing 19 of 34 from the field, career bests in both made baskets and attempts, according to the AP. He was 11 of 24 in the first half alone and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out. Barnes had 28 points in Wednesday's win over Orlando.

Toronto played without star Kawhi Leonard for the second straight meeting with the Magic. The AP reported that Leonard is sidelined by swelling in his left knee, and the Raptors have lost two of the three games he has missed. Toronto fell to 3-2.

The game had an edge from the start. Bane and RJ Barrett each received a technical foul after a brief scuffle near center court following an Orlando basket in the first quarter, the AP reported.

Winning without Banchero

Orlando has been without Banchero since he suffered a low-grade high right ankle sprain in the first half of a 115-93 home loss to Minnesota on Oct. 23. The team announced the MRI result the next day, and NBA.com reported there was no formal timetable for his return, though such injuries typically take several weeks to heal.

Banchero, the 2022 No. 1 overall pick and a 2024 All-Star, had been averaging team highs of 24.5 points and 7.5 assists through two games before the injury, according to NBA.com. Jalen Suggs and Jonathan Isaac were also listed out for Friday's game with knee injuries, according to ESPN's injury report.

That puts more of the offensive load on Wagner and Bane, and Friday was the clearest example yet of the pair carrying it. Bane, acquired from Memphis in the summer of 2025, and Wagner combined for 54 points and 17 assists.

The NBA Cup picture

Orlando and Toronto are in East Group A of the NBA Cup with the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets. Group-stage games count toward the regular-season standings, and the group winners and a wild card from each conference advance to the knockout rounds in December. The championship is set for Dec. 11 in Indianapolis.

Starting group play with a road win over a group rival gives the Magic an early edge in a format where one loss can decide a group.

What's next

The Magic return to Kia Center to host the Boston Celtics on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 3:30 p.m., then host Washington on Monday before a four-game Western trip. Their next NBA Cup game is at home against Milwaukee on Friday, Nov. 13. Toronto opens a four-game road trip Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
