Florida State Fires Mike Norvell, Takes On Buyout Near $50 Million After Clemson Loss

Florida State fired football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, Nov. 1, about 12 hours after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson, ending a tenure of six-plus seasons in Tallahassee and committing the university to a buyout reported at close to $50 million. Norvell leaves with a 41-39 record, a 2023 ACC championship and a program that has gone 10-23 since that title season, including 3-5 this fall.
Rick Stockstill, the program's director of scouting and a former Seminoles quarterback who spent 18 seasons as head coach at Middle Tennessee, will serve as interim coach for the final four games. The school said its search for a full-time coach begins immediately.
What Florida State announced
University president Richard McCullough announced the move Sunday. "We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program," McCullough said, according to The Associated Press, adding that the university shares the high expectations of Seminole fans.
The school also fired defensive coordinator Tony White and safeties coach Evan Cooper, according to ESPN. Linebackers coach Ernie Sims will serve as interim defensive coordinator, assistant defensive backs coach Greg Moss will coach the safeties, and offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. will continue to call plays.
Norvell delivered the news to the team himself on Sunday. Interim athletic director Bruce Warwick told reporters the coach urged players not to let up and left the room to a standing ovation.
The buyout
The cost of the decision is among the largest in college football. According to the AP, Norvell is owed roughly $47 million, equal to 85% of his remaining salary on a contract that runs through the 2031 season, and payouts to fired assistants push the total past $50 million. ESPN reported the buyout figure at $50.3 million. Norvell had been scheduled to earn $10.3 million in 2026.
The contract includes offset language, so the amount Florida State owes would shrink if Norvell takes another coaching job, the AP reported. The AP noted that his buyout alone is larger than the buyouts of Maryland's Mike Locksley, NC State's Dave Doeren and Baylor's Dave Aranda combined.
That price is what kept Norvell in place a year ago. After a 5-7 season in 2025, the administration chose to give him another year rather than pay the buyout, adding resources for the roster and reworking the personnel department, ESPN reported.
Why now
McCullough said at a Sunday news conference that the decision was not made overnight but that the Clemson loss was a defining moment. "I just did not see that trajectory," he said, according to ESPN, describing a program that had to show it was moving in the right direction.
Asked about the money, McCullough framed the cost as unavoidable. "How can we afford not to do this?" he said, adding that the university owed it to its constituencies to put a highly competitive team on the field.
Fan frustration had been building for weeks. Before kickoff Saturday, a plane towed a banner over Doak Campbell Stadium urging the school to fire Norvell and board chairman Peter Collins, and Florida State, a 5- to 6-point favorite depending on the line cited, played the fourth quarter in front of a mostly empty stadium. The university fired athletic director Michael Alford in mid-September and has not named a permanent replacement. A week before the Clemson game, McCullough had told fans the school was not asking them to ignore the results.
Norvell's record at Florida State
Norvell arrived from Memphis before the 2020 season. His seven seasons produced two winning records, both built largely through the transfer portal, and five losing ones. Year by year, the record breaks down as follows.
| Season | Record | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 3-6 | First season |
| 2021 | 5-7 | Included loss to FCS Jacksonville State |
| 2022 | 10-3 | First winning season |
| 2023 | 13-1 | ACC champions; left out of the CFP |
| 2024 | 2-10 | One ACC win |
| 2025 | 5-7 | Opened with win over Alabama |
| 2026 | 3-5 | 1-4 in the ACC at firing |
The turning point came in December 2023, when the College Football Playoff selection committee left out the unbeaten ACC champions after quarterback Jordan Travis was injured. More than 20 players opted out or entered the transfer portal before a 63-3 Orange Bowl loss to Georgia, and the program never recovered. Since 2024, Florida State is 4-17 in ACC play, according to ESPN, with losses to Stanford, Boston College and Duke, and it has not beaten Miami, Florida or Clemson since the 2023 season.
This fall followed the same pattern. The Seminoles beat Virginia 38-7 on Oct. 3 to reach 3-2, then lost at Louisville, at Miami and at home to Clemson.
What the interim coach inherits
Stockstill takes over a 3-5 team that needs three wins in its last four games to become bowl eligible. Florida State has not won a regular-season road game since beating Florida in Gainesville on Nov. 25, 2023, and two of its remaining games are on the road. The remaining schedule is below.
| Date | Opponent | Site |
|---|---|---|
| Sat., Nov. 7 | Boston College | Chestnut Hill, Mass. |
| Sat., Nov. 14 | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh |
| Sat., Nov. 21 | NC State | Tallahassee |
| Fri., Nov. 27 | Florida | Tallahassee |
The regular-season finale against the Gators in Tallahassee gives the interim staff a chance to end the program's losing run against its in-state rivals before a new coach arrives.
The search, and what it means in Florida
Florida State is now running two searches at once, for a head coach and a permanent athletic director, and McCullough said the school has hired a search firm for both. He declined to say whether an athletic director must be in place before a coach is hired, noting that time is of the essence with the early signing period about a month away. Warwick described a sense of urgency as paramount, according to WTXL.
No timeline or candidate list has come from the school. ESPN's early list of possible targets includes Duke coach Manny Diaz, a Florida State alumnus and Miami native who formerly coached the Hurricanes; SMU coach Rhett Lashlee, a former Miami offensive coordinator; Wake Forest coach Jake Dickert; Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham, Norvell's former offensive coordinator in Tallahassee; Missouri's Eliah Drinkwitz; Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann; New Mexico's Jason Eck; and former Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher. None has been publicly linked to the job by the university.
The opening adds a third major head-coaching storyline in the state's recruiting fight. The next Florida State coach will compete for Florida prospects against Miami's Mario Cristobal and Florida's Jon Sumrall, and the Seminoles' 2027 commitments, led by safety Ta'Shawn Poole, could draw interest from other programs during the transition.
What's next
Stockstill's first game as interim coach is Saturday, Nov. 7, at Boston College, with kickoff set for noon. The university has not said when it expects to name a permanent coach or athletic director. The Florida State-Clemson game that preceded the firing is covered in The Florida Press's game report.
