Heat Open Season vs. Timberwolves as Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes Miami Debut and LaMelo Ball Starts in Minnesota

The Giannis Antetokounmpo era in Miami officially begins Wednesday night. The Heat open the 2026-27 NBA season against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern at Kaseya Center, a nationally televised game on ESPN that will feature Antetokounmpo's first regular-season game for Miami and LaMelo Ball's first for Minnesota. Two of the summer's biggest trades meet on the same court on opening week.
How Giannis got to Miami
The Heat landed Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in a blockbuster trade announced July 6, according to NBA.com. Milwaukee received guard Tyler Herro, center Kel'el Ware, wing Jaime Jaquez Jr., guard Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick.
ESPN reported that the Bucks weighed a competing offer from the Boston Celtics before choosing Miami's package, which offered more young talent and draft assets. Antetokounmpo arrives as a two-time Most Valuable Player who led Milwaukee to the 2021 championship and was named Finals MVP.
The deal reshaped a team that finished 43-39 last season, 10th in the Eastern Conference, and lost in the play-in tournament to Charlotte. Miami also added Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and center Nick Richards on one-year deals, re-signed Andrew Wiggins and drafted guard Ryan Conwell at No. 37, while Norman Powell left for Chicago, according to Yahoo Sports. NBA.com's preview said Antetokounmpo elevates the Heat to contender status and that pairing him with Bam Adebayo could give coach Erik Spoelstra one of the league's best frontcourts.
What the preseason showed
Antetokounmpo played in three of Miami's first four exhibitions and averaged 15.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists while shooting 73.1% from the field, according to Yahoo Sports. His best night came on Oct. 14, when the Heat beat the Brooklyn Nets 144-128 before a sellout crowd of 19,600 at Kaseya Center. He finished with 20 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks in 23 minutes, one assist shy of a triple-double, as Miami outscored Brooklyn 62-38 in the paint.
The Heat closed the exhibition slate two nights later with a 136-115 loss to the Orlando Magic at Kia Center, with both Antetokounmpo and Adebayo held out. Conwell led Miami with 21 points and seven assists off the bench. Spoelstra brushed off the result. "This is not indicative of how we all feel," he said, according to Yahoo Sports. Miami finished the preseason 3-2.
A few questions remain heading into the opener. Thompson shot 7-of-26 overall and 3-of-20 from 3-point range across four exhibitions, while Wiggins averaged 14.3 points and called it possibly his best preseason. NBA.com projected a starting group built around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, with Davion Mitchell, Thompson and Wiggins as the likely remaining starters.
Adebayo's status
Adebayo missed the final two preseason games with right groin tightness. Yahoo Sports reported that he is day-to-day and that the injury is believed to be minor. Guard Dru Smith missed the entire preseason with a right calf strain, and third-year guard Pelle Larsson sat out the final three exhibitions with an illness. The team's status report for Wednesday will settle whether Adebayo and Antetokounmpo share the floor in a game that counts for the first time.
Expectations in South Florida
The trade has raised the bar for a franchise that has not won a playoff series since its 2023 run to the Finals. Yahoo Sports ranked Miami seventh in its preseason power rankings and noted a betting line of 46.5 wins, with the Heat at +3000 to win the NBA Finals. Its best-case scenario has Miami chasing the No. 1 seed in the East behind Antetokounmpo's pressure in the paint and a top-five defense; the worst case, if he misses time or the offense sputters, is another trip to the play-in.
NBA.com pointed to half-court scoring as the biggest question, though Miami led the league in transition possession rate last season at 24.9%, and the additions of Thompson, Hardaway and Portis give Spoelstra more 3-point shooting around his two big men. Richards' $3.1 million salary becomes fully guaranteed if he is on the roster on opening night, and Spoelstra's comments suggested he will be, according to Yahoo Sports.
LaMelo Ball's new team
Minnesota arrives with its own new star. The Timberwolves acquired Ball and guard Josh Green from the Charlotte Hornets in a four-team trade in late June, sending center Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps and three second-round picks to Charlotte, according to NBA.com. The deal also sent forward Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets and center Nic Claxton from Brooklyn to the Chicago Bulls. Minnesota later traded Green to Utah, according to NBA.com.
Ball, the 2020-21 Rookie of the Year and a 2022 All-Star, averaged 20.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 72 games for Charlotte last season. Season previews have framed him as the lead playmaker that Anthony Edwards has lacked, though health has been the concern: by one count he has played in 303 of a possible 482 regular-season games in his career, with ankle injuries the main culprit. Edwards, meanwhile, took time off this summer to let knee injuries heal.
Coach Chris Finch's team went 49-33 last season, finished sixth in the West and lost to San Antonio in six games in the conference semifinals. The roster also added forward Jonathan Kuminga on a two-year deal alongside Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels, while guard Donte DiVincenzo is sidelined by an Achilles injury, according to NBA.com.
A Florida swing for Minnesota
The Timberwolves' opening week runs through both of Florida's NBA markets. After Wednesday's game in Miami, Minnesota visits the Orlando Magic on Friday night at Kia Center. The two teams also saw each other this month: Miami hosted Minnesota in a preseason game at Kaseya Center on Oct. 10.
What's next
The Heat stay home for their second game, hosting the Detroit Pistons at Kaseya Center on Friday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m., before a quick trip to Charlotte on Saturday, Oct. 24. Detroit is coming off a playoff run that included a seven-game, first-round win over Orlando last spring.
Further out, NBA.com flagged several marquee dates on Miami's calendar: the New York Knicks on Nov. 27, the Boston Celtics on Christmas Day, and a Jan. 28 meeting with Milwaukee that will be Antetokounmpo's first game against the franchise he led for more than a decade.
