Luka Doncic Scores 42 as Lakers Beat Heat 138-117, Spoiling Giannis Antetokounmpo's 30-Point Night in West Coast Trip Opener

The Miami Heat's five-game West Coast trip started with a lopsided loss Monday night at Crypto.com Arena, where Luka Doncic scored 42 points with 13 assists and seven rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 138-117 win. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 30 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for Miami, which fell to 2-5 in the first season of the Antetokounmpo era.
Doncic hit six 3-pointers and scored at least 37 points for the fifth straight game, according to the Associated Press, one night after he had 45 points and 15 assists in a win over Toronto. The Lakers, who also played Friday and Sunday, improved to 6-2 and led for 94 percent of the game, according to ESPN's team statistics. Miami's largest lead was four points.
Doncic takes over early, again
Doncic opened with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in the first quarter, a pattern that has defined his start to the season. The AP reported that the defending NBA scoring champion is averaging 15.0 points in opening periods and has scored at least 13 in the first quarter in all but one of his seven games. Los Angeles led 37-30 after one quarter.
The Heat kept pace in a high-scoring second quarter, with both teams putting up 42 points, but Doncic had 24 by halftime and the Lakers carried a 79-72 lead into the break. The game turned in the first four and a half minutes of the third quarter, when Doncic scored nine more points to push the lead to 93-74. Los Angeles won the third quarter 32-21, and Miami never seriously threatened again. Austin Reaves handled the scoring load while Doncic rested to start the fourth.
Doncic finished 14-of-24 from the field, 6-of-15 from 3-point range and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line in 36 minutes, with a plus-26 rating. The AP reported it was his fourth 40-point game in his last five, a stretch in which he is averaging 43.4 points.
The scoring by quarter, from the ESPN box score:
| Team | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | Final |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat | 30 | 42 | 21 | 24 | 117 |
| Lakers | 37 | 42 | 32 | 27 | 138 |
Antetokounmpo's line and Miami's supporting cast
Antetokounmpo shot 10-of-17 from the field and 10-of-15 from the line in 34 minutes, missing all three of his 3-point attempts. He added two blocks and a steal but also committed seven turnovers. Klay Thompson scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-7 from deep, and Bam Adebayo added 16 points and nine rebounds. Davion Mitchell was perfect, going 5-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 from 3-point range for 15 points with seven assists.
Miami actually shot 51 percent from the field and made 16 3-pointers, but the Lakers shot 57 percent and made 19. The bigger gap came near the basket and with the ball: Los Angeles outscored Miami 60-38 in the paint, piled up 39 assists to Miami's 28, and the Heat committed 19 turnovers. Miami's only clear edge was in transition, where it outscored the Lakers 20-6 on fast-break points.
Reaves finished with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and Walker Kessler had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Sandro Mamukelashvili added 13 off the bench. Ziaire Williams returned from a three-game absence with a foot injury and scored nine, though Jake LaRavia kept the starting spot Williams had held, according to the AP.
Where the Heat stand after seven games
The loss was Miami's fifth in seven games. The Heat opened 0-4, falling at home to Minnesota on Oct. 21 and Detroit on Oct. 23, at Charlotte on Oct. 24 and at home to Dallas on Oct. 26. They then won two straight, beating Atlanta 129-117 on the road on Oct. 28 for their first win and routing Indiana 145-125 at home on Oct. 30, when Antetokounmpo posted a triple-double in the NBA Cup opener.
Miami had not played since that Friday win, while the Lakers were on the second night of a back-to-back. The rest did not show. Andrew Wiggins scored seven points and finished with a team-worst minus-26, and Adebayo and Thompson were both minus-22 or worse.
The Antetokounmpo trade, four months later
The roster was built to change Miami's trajectory. In late June, Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and a package of draft picks, according to NBC 6 South Florida's report on the deal. The Bucks received the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick.
Antetokounmpo, 31, is a two-time MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year and the Finals MVP of Milwaukee's 2021 title team. He will become eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension on Jan. 6, 2027, and could become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he declines his $62.8 million player option, according to NBC 6. That contract timeline puts a premium on Miami showing progress this winter.
The individual production has been there. Antetokounmpo scored 35 points in his Miami debut, 36 against Detroit, and posted the triple-double against Indiana. The results around him have lagged, and Portis managed two points in 18 minutes off the bench on Monday.
A Riley moment in Los Angeles
Heat president Pat Riley received a big ovation from Lakers fans when he was shown on the arena scoreboard, according to the AP. The Lakers unveiled a statue of Riley, their Showtime-era coach, outside the arena last season. Riley's front office built this Heat roster around the Antetokounmpo deal, and the early results will be part of the conversation as the trip continues.
What's next
The trip continues Wednesday night, Nov. 4, against the LA Clippers, with a 10:30 p.m. Eastern tipoff in the ESPN schedule. Miami then visits the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, Nov. 5, the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Nov. 8, and the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, Nov. 10, before returning home to face Cleveland at Kaseya Center on Nov. 13.
The Lakers play at Sacramento on Wednesday night. For Miami, the next four games will go a long way toward deciding whether the Heat return to South Florida with momentum or with a deeper hole in the Eastern Conference standings.
