A new coach, a familiar core and a lingering injury question greet the Orlando Magic on opening night. The Magic host the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. Eastern at Kia Center in downtown Orlando, the first regular-season game for coach Sean Sweeney. Paolo Banchero leads a roster aiming to end a run of three straight first-round playoff exits, while fellow forward Franz Wagner is day-to-day with right shoulder soreness after leaving the preseason finale.

It is a change of scenery on the schedule, too. The Magic opened against the Miami Heat in each of the past two seasons, so this is the first time in three years Orlando starts a season against someone else. It is also the Magic's third home opener in the past four seasons, according to WFTV.

Sweeney's first game

Orlando hired Sweeney in June as the 16th head coach in franchise history after parting ways with Jamahl Mosley, who was let go after five seasons. Sweeney, taking his first NBA head coaching job, came from the San Antonio Spurs, where as associate head coach he built a defensive scheme around Victor Wembanyama that turned the Spurs into one of the league's best defensive teams, according to reports at the time of his hiring. He previously worked as an assistant in Dallas, Detroit, Milwaukee and Brooklyn. His staff includes Joe Prunty, Greg Buckner and Popeye Jones.

Defense is the obvious place to start. NBA.com noted that Orlando slipped from second in defensive efficiency in 2024-25 to 13th last season, even as its offense improved. The Magic finished 45-37, eighth in the Eastern Conference, and lost a seven-game first-round series to the Detroit Pistons after leading it 3-1. The franchise has not won a playoff series since 2010.

Banchero, Wagner and Bane

Banchero, Wagner and guard Desmond Bane form the scoring core, with Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black, Wendell Carter Jr. and Goga Bitadze around them. Nikola Vučević is back in Orlando on a one-year deal. Health is the first priority, NBA.com wrote: Wagner played just 34 games last season and Suggs 57.

That concern resurfaced in the preseason finale. Wagner had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists against Miami before exiting with right shoulder soreness. Sweeney said Sunday that Wagner did some light work in practice and was still being evaluated. An Oct. 20 injury listing had him day-to-day for the opener. If he cannot go, Tristan da Silva is the likely replacement in the starting lineup, according to reports.

The injury list runs deeper. Forward Noah Penda is out with a right hamstring issue, rookie guard Jase Richardson is day-to-day with low back soreness, and Black and Jonathan Isaac were already sidelined during the preseason, according to Yahoo Sports.

A strong preseason

The Magic went 3-1 in exhibition play. After a 119-105 loss at Cleveland on Oct. 11, Orlando beat the Cavaliers 132-116 two nights later in its first home preseason game, with Banchero and Wagner leading the way.

The finale on Oct. 16 was an in-state statement, even with Miami resting Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. The Magic beat the Heat 136-115 at Kia Center after trailing by 12 in the first quarter, leading by as many as 23 in the second half. Banchero scored a game-high 24 points, making 13 of 16 free throws, and Bane added 23, going 7-for-12 from 3-point range. Vučević, back from a rest day, scored 13 first-half points. Yahoo Sports noted that Orlando has now beaten Miami eight straight times dating to last season.

Bane said afterward that the defense still fell short of the team's expectations despite the 21-point margin, and Sweeney said he thought the team did "a pretty good job of trying to get acclimated to the game."

Scouting the Hawks

Atlanta arrives as a Southeast Division rival that has had Orlando's number lately; the Hawks swept the regular-season series last year. Coach Quin Snyder's team went 46-36, finished sixth in the East and lost in the first round to the New York Knicks after holding a 2-1 series lead, according to NBA.com.

Forward Jalen Johnson is the centerpiece after averaging 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists and earning his first All-Star and All-NBA selections. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the league's Most Improved Player, averaged 20.8 points, and CJ McCollum added 18.7. Onyeka Okongwu and Dyson Daniels anchor the defense. Atlanta added Luguentz Dort, Dorian Finney-Smith, Aaron Wiggins and lottery pick Kingston Flemings, while Trae Young was traded to Washington last season. NBA.com described this year's Hawks as deep and defensive-minded, especially on the perimeter. NBA.com's preview also suggested the opener could help decide the top of the Southeast Division.

How to watch

The opener is not on national television. Locally distributed Magic games air for free on WFTV Channel 9 or WRDQ TV27 in the Orlando market, and on radio through the Magic Audio Network with flagship FM 96.9 The Game, according to WFTV. In Northeast Florida, Action Sports Jax TV on WJAX-TV 47.2 is the team's exclusive local television partner, according to Action News Jax.

What's next

The opening week does not get easier. Orlando hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., when Anthony Edwards and newly acquired LaMelo Ball visit Kia Center two days after opening their season in Miami. The Magic then visit the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., before a two-game trip to Toronto on Oct. 28 and Oct. 30, the second an NBA Cup game.
