No. 3 Miami will be a heavy favorite on paper when Florida State visits Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night, but Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal spent his weekly news conference warning his unbeaten team against taking the 71st meeting of the in-state rivalry for granted. "If anyone is assuming that they should win or they're entitled to winning, they're out of their minds," Cristobal said Monday. "They're going to get beat."

Miami (5-0, 3-0 ACC) comes off a bye week, while Florida State (3-3, 1-2 ACC) arrives in Miami Gardens after a 44-20 loss at Louisville that extended the Seminoles' road losing streak to 11 games. The game is set for Saturday, Oct. 17, with a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN, according to published Week 7 television selections.

Cristobal's message: respect the opponent

Cristobal, a former Miami offensive lineman, repeatedly steered questions about Florida State's record back toward his own team's preparation. He used a hypothetical about a single play swinging a game, saying "A fourth-and-two conversion makes it 21-0, and the game's practically over," to illustrate how quickly a contest can turn in either direction.

Asked about home-field advantage, he said "anytime you play at home, you have that opportunity," before adding: "But the best thing you could always do is play well." He also brushed aside outside debate about the ACC pecking order, noting "there's no week five trophies to be handed out, or medals," and said flatly: "I really couldn't care less about the outside world."

Cristobal has long described the Miami and Florida State series as "the greatest rivalry in sports," a line he used at ACC media days after returning to coach his alma mater. He lettered at Miami from 1989 to 1992, a span in which the Hurricanes went 3-1 against Florida State, including the 17-16 and 19-16 wins in 1991 and 1992. As Miami's head coach he is 2-2 against the Seminoles and Mike Norvell, losing in 2022 and 2023 before winning the last two meetings.

Miami's unbeaten start

The Hurricanes have won every game by at least 13 points behind quarterback Darian Mensah, who threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns in the opener at Stanford, and receiver Malachi Toney, who caught passes for 234 yards and three scores in that game. Yahoo Sports' coverage of the news conference described Miami's defense as an elite, top-ranked unit heading into the rivalry game.

Miami's results so far, according to the team's season record:

Help on the way in the secondary

The bye week gave Miami time to get healthier, particularly at cornerback. Starting cornerback Xavier Lucas is expected back for Florida State, and Bryce Fitzgerald is moving back to safety as starters return to the secondary. Fellow starting cornerback OJ Frederique Jr. is ahead of schedule in his recovery, though he is not expected back until late in the season, according to reports from the news conference.

On the offensive line, Cristobal discussed Jackson Cantwell, the five-star recruit and Gatorade Player of the Year, who has seen limited snaps while being developed at tackle and getting work at other line spots. Cristobal said Cantwell is "on his way to being a great player, an elite player."

Florida State's skid away from Tallahassee

Florida State's trip to South Florida follows one of its most painful losses of the season. The Seminoles led Louisville 14-0 last Friday night on two touchdowns from quarterback Ashton Daniels, then allowed 35 unanswered points. The turning point came when Louisville stopped a Florida State screen pass on fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line, and Cardinals running back Isaac Brown answered with a 97-yard touchdown run on the next play. Brown finished with a career-high 235 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

"Unfortunately, we didn't do a good enough job in that moment," Norvell said of the fourth-down sequence, according to News4JAX. Norvell took the blame for the performance after the game, and his job security has become a running topic around the program as Florida State sits at .500 midway through the season.

Daniels completed 21 of 37 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns against Louisville and also ran for a score. The loss was Florida State's 11th straight on the road.

A rivalry Miami now leads 37-33

Miami leads the all-time series 37-33, a series that dates to a 35-13 Hurricanes win in 1951. The Hurricanes have won the last two meetings, including a 28-22 win over a ranked Florida State team in Tallahassee on Oct. 4, 2025, after the Seminoles had won two straight.

The last four meetings, all under Cristobal and Norvell:

2023TallahasseeFSU 27, Miami 20
2024Miami GardensMiami 36, FSU 14

Hard Rock Stadium has not always been friendly to the home team in this series. Florida State won six of the nine meetings played at the Miami Gardens stadium from 2008 through 2024, though Miami won the most recent one there, 36-14 in 2024.

A major recruiting weekend

The game doubles as Miami's biggest recruiting weekend of the year. The program expects more than 100 recruits at Hard Rock Stadium, according to reports from the news conference, and a list of visitors reported by Canes Insight includes several top 2028 prospects, among them receiver Brysen Wright, rated the No. 1 overall player in that class.

For South Florida, that means a packed prime-time showcase: an unbeaten, top-three Hurricanes team, a rivalry with eight combined national titles between the programs, and a crowd of recruits watching from the sideline.

What's next

A win would push Miami to 6-0 and 4-0 in the ACC before a home game against Pittsburgh on Oct. 24, followed by road trips to North Carolina on Oct. 31 and Notre Dame on Nov. 7. Florida State, meanwhile, is trying to end its road losing streak and avoid a third straight loss to its rival, with every result now weighed against questions about Norvell's future.

Cristobal's point all week has been that none of that history decides Saturday. As he put it, the teams that assume they will win are "going to get beat."
