Michelle Parker's ex-fiance Dale Smith Jr. charged with murder nearly 15 years after Orlando mom vanished

Orlando police on Wednesday, Oct. 14, arrested Dale Smith Jr., the former fiance of Michelle Parker, and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with the Orlando mother's disappearance, nearly 15 years after she was last seen on Nov. 17, 2011. Parker's remains have never been found. Smith has long been the only publicly named suspect in one of Central Florida's best-known missing-person cases, but until this week he had never been arrested or charged in it. He has denied any involvement, and his attorney says police have not shown any new evidence.
The Orlando Police Department said its Fugitive Unit and SWAT Team took Smith into custody Wednesday morning. Police Chief Eric Smith announced the arrest at a 1:30 p.m. news conference at OPD headquarters. The chief said the suspect was surprised to be arrested at his place of work, according to News 6 (WKMG).
What police say led to the arrest
Police credited a renewed review of the case and advances in digital forensics. According to the department, investigators over the past year expanded the team assigned to Parker's disappearance and reexamined witness testimony, statements made by Smith and digital evidence gathered during the original 2011 investigation.
"Over the past year, we expanded our investigative team looking into this case and took a fresh, focused look at all of the evidence. We reexamined testimony and conflicting statements made by the suspect, and used advanced and digital forensics to uncover and analyze additional evidence," Chief Smith said, as quoted by News 6.
According to WFTV, police said newer technology allowed detectives to analyze data from phones, computers and vehicles collected in the original investigation in more detail, and that the analysis turned up additional information that moved the case forward. One of the lead detectives told reporters that new evidence had been collected within the last year and that old data was being reexamined. FOX 35 reported that the detective specifically mentioned better location data and communications between devices used in 2011.
"Our detectives continued to pursue leads and follow the facts wherever they led," Chief Smith said in remarks reported by WFTV. "Their work reflects this department's commitment to investigating every case thoroughly and pursuing justice, regardless of how much time has passed."
The chief also said the detectives on the case are full-time homicide investigators carrying a normal caseload, and that a drop in violent crime and in the number of homicides gave them time to focus on Parker's case, according to News 6. Police said they are not releasing further details about the evidence while the case moves through the court system.
The prosecutor's role
State Attorney Monique Worrell, whose Ninth Judicial Circuit office covers Orange and Osceola counties, said prosecutors are starting with a second-degree murder charge but that the charge could be upgraded as the evidence allows, News 6 reported. Worrell said her office worked with the Orlando Police Department before the arrest was made, though she did not describe what that collaboration involved.
"I want to commend the office of the state attorney and the prosecutors who worked collaboratively with law enforcement in order to bring this case to this point," Worrell said, according to News 6.
Smith was booked into the Orange County Jail. NBC News reported he was being held without bond. No information about a first appearance hearing had been published as of Thursday.
Defense attorney says police targeted Smith for years
Smith's attorney, Rajan Joshi, spoke with WFTV outside the jail Wednesday as he prepared to meet with his client. Joshi, who said he has represented Smith since the early stages of the investigation, said he was shocked by the arrest and believes police have singled out his client for years.
Joshi told WFTV that police had searched Smith's house, conducted a large forensics search and bugged the home. "There was no evidence that came up 15 years ago," he said. "So what I'm interested in seeing is what evidence they have now."
Smith has consistently said he did not know what happened to Parker after she dropped off their children at his home, according to WFTV's account of the case. An arrest is an accusation, not a finding of guilt, and Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The day Michelle Parker disappeared
Parker, 33, was a mother of three. On Nov. 17, 2011, she dropped off the couple's 3-year-old twins at Smith's Orlando home, according to police. She was supposed to go to work that evening but never arrived, FOX 35 reported. Police say Smith was the last known person to see or hear from her.
The same day, an episode of the television show "The People's Court" aired nationally featuring Parker and Smith arguing over a $5,000 engagement ring. During the episode, Parker described the relationship as a "roller coaster ride" and said it was over, WFTV reported.
The next day, police found Parker's black Hummer abandoned near Walden Circle in southwest Orlando. About three weeks later, an Orlando police dive team recovered her cellphone from Lake Conway in Belle Isle, according to WFTV. She has never been located.
Nearly 15 years of searches
The case drew sustained attention across Central Florida through repeated searches, public appeals by Parker's family and court fights. The key moments, as reported by WFTV and FOX 35, are below.
| Date | Event | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Nov. 17, 2011 | Parker drops twins at Smith's home, vanishes | "People's Court" episode airs same day |
| Nov. 18, 2011 | Her Hummer found near Walden Circle | No sign of Parker |
| Nov. 28, 2011 | Then-Chief Paul Rooney names Smith primary suspect | No charges filed |
| December 2011 | Police divers recover her phone in Lake Conway | Parker still missing |
| February 2012 | Sheriff's dive team searches lake near South Orange Blossom Trail | Nothing found |
| 2013 | Parker's mother files wrongful death lawsuit | Suit later dropped |
| 2022 | Anonymous donor offers $200,000 reward | Followed WFTV special "The Search" |
| August 2023 | Radar search under concrete slab at Smith's father's home | No remains found |
| Oct. 14, 2026 | Smith arrested | Charged with second-degree murder |
The slab searched in 2023 had been poured in 2012, after Parker disappeared, officials said at the time, according to WFTV. Smith's father has not been identified as a suspect. Parker's mother, Yvonne Stewart, also sought access to the twins after Smith obtained custody of them, FOX 35 reported.
Family reaction
Parker's father and stepmother, Brad and Gayle Parker, have publicly pressed for answers for years, and both spoke with Orlando TV stations after the arrest. FOX 35 reported that her father reacted with relief. On the 14th anniversary of her disappearance in November 2025, the family was still appealing to the public for information.
Chief Smith said that many of the detectives who originally worked the case have since retired but never stopped working on it, News 6 reported. Four Orlando police chiefs have overseen the investigation: Paul Rooney, John Mina, Orlando Rolon and now Eric Smith.
What's next
Smith's case will now move through the Orange County court system. Worrell's office has said the charge could rise above second-degree murder depending on the evidence. Police say the search for Parker's remains continues and that they remain committed to finding her and giving her family answers.
