Florida to Begin Testing Electric Air Taxis at Polk County SunTrax Site

Electric air taxis will begin flight testing in Central Florida before the end of this year, Gov. Ron DeSantis said during an appearance at the SunTrax facility in Polk County, where the state has built what officials describe as the nation's first dedicated aerial test track for advanced air mobility aircraft. The announcement puts a firm date on a program Florida has been assembling for several years and positions the state as one of a small group participating in a Federal Aviation Administration pilot program for integrating the aircraft into national airspace.
SunTrax sits between Tampa and Orlando off Interstate 4, on a site the Florida Department of Transportation originally developed to test connected and autonomous ground vehicles. The campus has since expanded to include an aviation component with two vertiports, the landing and takeoff pads that electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, commonly shortened to eVTOL, require in place of conventional runways.
The governor framed the testing schedule as evidence that Florida is moving faster than other states on emerging transportation technology, pointing to autonomous ride-hailing vehicles already operating in Miami and Orlando as the ground-level version of the same argument. The state's pitch to manufacturers is regulatory speed combined with year-round flying weather and a large tourism market that could absorb short-hop air service.
What SunTrax actually is
The SunTrax complex covers several hundred acres in Auburndale, in the middle of Polk County's phosphate and citrus country. The original build-out centered on a closed high-speed oval and an interior test pad where vehicles could be run through scenarios that would be unsafe or impossible on public roads. Toll technology, connected-vehicle communications, and autonomous driving systems have all been tested there.
The aviation expansion adds a controlled environment for aircraft that do not fit neatly into existing aviation infrastructure. An eVTOL aircraft takes off vertically like a helicopter, transitions to wing-borne flight, and lands vertically again. Testing that transition, along with the communications and detect-and-avoid systems the aircraft depend on, requires airspace and ground facilities that most airports are not set up to provide.
Two vertiports on the site give operators somewhere to run repeated takeoff and landing cycles, evaluate ground handling and charging, and test how the aircraft communicate with air traffic systems. Because the site is state-controlled, companies can run those cycles without competing for slots at a busy commercial airport.
State officials have described the aviation campus as spanning roughly 200 acres within the larger SunTrax footprint. The facility is operated under the Florida Department of Transportation, which has treated the project as an economic development play as much as a transportation one.
Which companies are involved
The most concrete commitment publicly identified so far comes from Skyfly, a United Kingdom-based manufacturer that plans to bring a two-seat electric aircraft to Florida for testing and certification work. The company has indicated an entry-to-market price in the range of $400,000 for the aircraft, which places it closer to a personal aviation product than to a commercial air taxi fleet vehicle.
Larger eVTOL developers have been circling Florida for years. Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation have both announced Florida operating plans at various points, and both have publicly discussed South Florida and Central Florida routes as early commercial markets. Neither company's specific participation at SunTrax was detailed in the announcement.
The market context matters here. eVTOL developers have raised billions of dollars on the premise that certification is imminent and that short urban and regional routes can be flown profitably at prices competitive with premium ground transportation. Certification timelines have repeatedly slipped, and the sector has consolidated as capital has tightened.
For manufacturers, a state-run test site reduces cost and friction. For Florida, hosting that testing creates a claim on the supply chain, the maintenance base, and the pilot training infrastructure that would follow if the aircraft reach commercial service.
The federal piece
Florida's selection for an FAA pilot program on vertical launch and advanced air mobility integration is the regulatory hook for the whole effort. The FAA controls national airspace, and no amount of state enthusiasm substitutes for federal type certification of an aircraft or federal rules governing where and how it can fly.
The pilot program structure allows a limited number of states and localities to work through integration questions in a controlled way, generating data the agency can use when writing broader rules. Those questions include how eVTOL aircraft share airspace with helicopters and general aviation, what communications standards apply, how vertiports are certified, and what noise limits should govern operations over populated areas.
Florida's participation gives the state a seat at the table when those standards are drafted, which is a durable advantage regardless of which manufacturer succeeds commercially. It also gives Florida companies and airports early insight into what compliance will require.
Federal certification of the aircraft themselves remains the gating item. Until the FAA signs off on an aircraft type, testing at SunTrax is developmental work, not a precursor to passenger service within any specific timeframe.
What it means for Floridians
In the near term, almost nothing changes for the average resident. Testing at a closed facility in Polk County will not produce air taxi service in Miami, Tampa, or Orlando this year or next. The realistic first commercial applications, if certification arrives, are likely to be airport-to-downtown shuttles and resort connections priced well above a rideshare fare.
The more immediate effect is economic. Aerospace and aviation manufacturing already employ tens of thousands of Floridians, concentrated on the Space Coast, in the Daytona Beach area around Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and in South Florida's maintenance and repair sector. A test facility that draws manufacturers creates engineering and technician jobs that are geographically sticky.
Polk County in particular has been pushing to diversify beyond agriculture, phosphate, and logistics. The county sits at the center of the I-4 corridor and has absorbed enormous residential growth as buyers priced out of Orlando and Tampa have moved inland. A high-technology anchor tenant fits the county's stated development strategy.
There are open questions Floridians will eventually have to weigh in on. Noise is the most obvious. eVTOL manufacturers claim their aircraft are substantially quieter than helicopters, but the aircraft would fly far more frequently than helicopters do if the business model works. Where vertiports get sited, and who lives underneath the approach paths, will become a local zoning fight in every metro area that pursues them.
How Florida compares
Several states have courted the advanced air mobility sector. Ohio has invested heavily through its aerospace corridor and NASA connections. Texas and California host major manufacturers. New York has explored heliport conversions in Manhattan. Florida's advantage has been regulatory posture and the ready-made SunTrax asset.
The state's argument to companies is that it can move quickly on permitting and infrastructure and that it offers an unusually favorable operating environment: no state income tax, flat terrain, dense tourism corridors, and weather that permits year-round flight testing outside of the summer thunderstorm season and hurricane months.
The counterargument, which industry analysts have raised repeatedly, is that state incentives do not accelerate FAA certification, and certification is the binding constraint. States can prepare the ground, but they cannot deliver a market.
Florida has hedged that risk by building SunTrax as a multi-use facility. Even if the eVTOL sector consolidates further, the ground-vehicle testing mission continues, and the vertiports have applications for cargo drones and emergency medical aviation that do not depend on passenger certification.
The certification obstacle
Type certification is the process by which the FAA determines that an aircraft design meets airworthiness standards. For conventional aircraft, those standards have been refined over decades and the process, while long, is well understood. For eVTOL aircraft, much of the applicable standard had to be written from scratch.
The complication is that these aircraft do not fit existing categories. They are not helicopters, they are not fixed-wing airplanes, and they operate in a transition regime that combines elements of both. Distributed electric propulsion, with multiple rotors driven by batteries rather than a single engine, introduces failure modes that existing certification standards were not designed to evaluate.
Battery energy density is the persistent engineering constraint. Aviation demands both high energy per unit mass and high power output, and current battery chemistry forces a tradeoff between range, payload, and reserve margin. Regulators require substantial reserves for diversion to an alternate landing site, and that requirement consumes a meaningful share of the available energy budget.
Pilot certification and operational rules are a separate track. The FAA has to determine what qualifications an eVTOL pilot needs and eventually whether and how reduced-crew or autonomous operations could be authorized, questions that will take years beyond aircraft certification itself.
What's next
The stated milestone is active flight testing at SunTrax before the end of 2026. That means the practical steps between now and December are aircraft delivery, ground testing, airspace coordination with the FAA, and initial tethered or low-altitude flights before any full transition-to-forward-flight testing.
Watch for additional manufacturer announcements. A test facility becomes credible when multiple companies commit, and Florida officials have signaled they expect more participants. The Florida Department of Transportation and Space Florida are the agencies most likely to make those announcements.
The FAA pilot program will also generate reporting requirements and public documents over the coming year, which will offer a clearer picture of what is actually being tested than a ribbon-cutting appearance provides.
For residents of Polk County and the I-4 corridor, the visible change will be gradual: more construction at the SunTrax site, more aviation traffic in a specific block of airspace over Auburndale, and eventually the sight of aircraft that look like nothing currently flying over Florida.
