Short-handed Magic routed by Raptors 129-99 in Toronto, fall to 1-3

The Orlando Magic's injury problems caught up with them in Toronto. Scottie Barnes scored 28 points, RJ Barrett had 25 and the Raptors routed the Magic 129-99 on Wednesday night, Oct. 28, at Scotiabank Arena, dropping Orlando to 1-3 three days after its first win of the season.
Reserve forward Tristan da Silva led Orlando with 20 points. The Magic played without leading scorer Paolo Banchero and guard Jalen Suggs, and they turned the ball over 20 times. Toronto improved to 3-1 even with its own star, Kawhi Leonard, sitting out with swelling in his left knee, according to The Associated Press recap carried by ESPN.
A fast Orlando start that did not last
The Magic opened well. Anthony Black scored three early baskets, Jevon Carter hit a step-back 3 and Desmond Bane converted a three-point play, and Orlando led 19-10 with 6:19 left in the first quarter, according to ESPN's play-by-play. That nine-point margin was the Magic's largest lead of the night.
Toronto then took over. The Raptors outscored Orlando 22-6 over the rest of the quarter, with Barrett hitting two 3-pointers in the final 71 seconds, to lead 32-25 after one.
Orlando stayed within reach for part of the second quarter. Da Silva hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and a Goga Bitadze dunk cut Toronto's lead to 45-42 with 6:07 left in the half. The Raptors answered with an 8-2 burst, including a Murray-Boyles 3-pointer and a Shead layup, and the lead never fell below seven again. After Bane's 3 made it 60-51 with 2:21 left, Toronto closed the half on a 9-2 run, capped by a Barnes jumper, to lead 69-53 at the break. Toronto scored 37 points in the second quarter, its highest total of any period.
The game got away from Orlando early in the third. Ja'Kobe Walter hit a 3 and Barnes scored the next six Toronto points to push the lead to 77-53, and the Raptors were up 103-76 entering the fourth. Their largest lead was 33 points.
Turnovers and missed shots
The box score explains the margin. Orlando had 20 turnovers, and Toronto turned them into 23 points, according to ESPN's team statistics. The Raptors finished with 15 steals. Franz Wagner, who scored 15 points with five assists, had seven of the Magic's turnovers.
Orlando also struggled from the perimeter, shooting 10 of 35 from 3-point range, 29%, while Toronto made 15 of 35, 43%. The Magic shot 41% overall to the Raptors' 50%. Bane went 3 of 14 from the field for 13 points, though he made all five of his free throws. Wendell Carter Jr. grabbed 10 rebounds but scored three points.
The Raptors also beat Orlando in transition, 23-12 in fast-break points, and outrebounded the Magic 45-34. Orlando did get to the free-throw line, making 23 of 29, but Toronto was just as effective there, going 26 of 31.
Da Silva the bright spot
Da Silva gave Orlando its best stretch of offense. He made 8 of 10 shots, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range, and scored Orlando's first seven points of the fourth quarter, though by then the Magic trailed by more than 20. Guard Jase Richardson, starting in the backcourt, added 10 points, and Jamal Cain scored nine off the bench.
Coach Sean Sweeney, in his first season leading Orlando, emptied his bench in the final minutes. The Magic used 12 players.
Toronto's balanced night
Barnes made 11 of 17 shots and added six rebounds and four assists, and he finished plus-30. Barrett had nine rebounds and six assists to go with his 25 points. Immanuel Quickley added 16 points and seven assists, and Walter scored 14 while starting in Leonard's place. Backup point guard Jamal Shead had 13 points and seven assists, a spark the AP singled out.
The AP reported that Leonard was not on the Raptors' bench. Toronto was also without Nate Bittle, who is out with a foot injury, according to ESPN's injury report.
Orlando's injury list and early record
Banchero has been out since injuring his right ankle in Orlando's Oct. 23 loss to Minnesota, when he sat out the fourth quarter with what the AP described at the time as ankle soreness. He was listed out with an ankle injury for Wednesday's game, along with Suggs (knee), Jonathan Isaac (knee), Noah Penda (hamstring) and Izaiyah Nelson (ankle), according to ESPN's injury report. Multiple outlets reported after the Minnesota game that Banchero had a low-grade high ankle sprain, an injury that typically costs players several weeks; the Magic have not announced a firm return date in the reports reviewed for this story.
Suggs was hurt in the fourth quarter of Orlando's 111-102 win at New York on Oct. 25, the AP reported. That game was the Magic's first win under Sweeney, with Wagner scoring 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter against the reigning NBA champion Knicks.
Orlando's results so far are below.
| Date | Opponent | Site | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 21 | Atlanta Hawks | Kia Center | Lost 132-125 |
| Oct. 23 | Minnesota Timberwolves | Kia Center | Lost 115-93 |
| Oct. 25 | New York Knicks | New York | Won 111-102 |
| Oct. 28 | Toronto Raptors | Toronto | Lost 129-99 |
In the opener, Banchero scored 35 points with 10 assists in a loss to Atlanta that spoiled Sweeney's debut, according to the AP. Without him, Orlando has leaned on Wagner, Bane and Carter, and on Black, who returned against the Knicks after missing the first two games with an ankle injury.
The lopsided score was also a familiar one in this matchup. Toronto beat Orlando 139-87 in the teams' meeting in Toronto on March 29, 2026, a game in which the Raptors scored 31 straight points, according to CBS Sports' recap. Barnes had a career-high 15 assists that night.
What's next
The Magic stay in Toronto for a rematch with the Raptors on Friday, Oct. 30, at Scotiabank Arena, an NBA Cup group-play game. Orlando then returns home to the Kia Center to host the Boston Celtics on Sunday, Nov. 1, and the Washington Wizards on Monday, Nov. 2, before a West Coast trip that starts in Phoenix.
