Florida Bakes in Mid-90s Heat With High Rip Current Risk on Both Coasts

Florida opened the week under a broad dome of heat, with temperatures climbing into the low to mid 90s across most of the peninsula and parts of the Panhandle reaching the mid 90s, while forecasters flagged a high risk of rip currents along the state's Atlantic beaches and a gusty pattern building for midweek.
The setup is typical for mid-September in Florida, which is often the state's most underestimated stretch of heat. The astronomical calendar says autumn is a week away. Relief is on the way for part of the state, but not all of it. Forecast guidance pointed to gusty and breezy conditions developing Tuesday into Wednesday, with gusts up to 35 mph on Wednesday and up to 30 mph on Thursday, mainly along the coasts. That breeze will knock down the oppressive feel in coastal communities while doing considerably less for interior counties.
Where the heat is worst
Interior Florida bears the brunt of a pattern like this one. Coastal communities get a sea breeze that arrives in the early afternoon and cuts the temperature by several degrees, and the effect compounds on both the Gulf and Atlantic sides. The Panhandle's push into the mid 90s reflects a slightly different mechanism. Why the heat index matters more than the temperature

The mechanism is the sea breeze. Air heated over land rises, drawing in cooler air from both coasts, and where the Gulf and Atlantic sea breeze boundaries collide over the interior peninsula, the resulting lift produces towering thunderstorms nearly every summer afternoon. Those storms are often intense and brief, and their electrical output is disproportionate to their size.
The safety guidance is simple and widely ignored. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance. Move indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle, and stay there for 30 minutes after the last thunder. Golf courses, athletic fields, beaches, and construction sites are where Florida's lightning casualties occur, and in most cases the victim had time to seek shelter and did not.
How the sea breeze shapes a Florida day
Residents who have lived here long enough plan around the sea breeze without necessarily naming it. Morning is calm and heating rapidly. By early afternoon the breeze arrives at the coast and works inland. By mid to late afternoon, the collision zone over the interior fires storms that drift and dissipate by evening.
This pattern is why coastal and inland Florida experience the same air mass so differently, and why a forecast high can be met at the airport and missed by several degrees a few miles away. It is also why outdoor work and exercise in Florida are best scheduled before 10 a.m. rather than in the early evening, which feels cooler but often is not by much and carries storm risk.
