Lake Okeechobee Algae Bloom Covers More Than Half the Lake This Summer

More than half of Lake Okeechobee is covered by a blue-green algae bloom that researchers monitoring the lake have described as close to the worst on record, a condition that has persisted through the peak of Florida's wet season. The bloom is worse than the typical annual summer outbreak, though scientists tracking it have said there is no current indication it will produce a regional repeat of the 2018 and 2019 events that fouled estuaries on both Florida coasts and prompted a state of emergency.
What is in the water
The organisms driving the bloom are cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae. They are not true algae but photosynthetic bacteria, among the oldest life forms on the planet, and under the right conditions they multiply into dense mats that turn water an opaque green and can accumulate into a paint-like surface scum along shorelines, in canals and in marina basins.
Several cyanobacteria species produce toxins. Microcystin, the compound most often detected in Florida freshwater blooms, can affect the liver and can cause skin irritation, gastrointestinal illness and respiratory symptoms after contact or inhalation of aerosolized spray. Pets and livestock are at higher risk than people because animals will drink affected water directly and will not avoid a visibly fouled shoreline. Dog deaths following exposure to cyanobacteria blooms have been documented in Florida and elsewhere.
Observers on the lake have noted that even the portions not visibly green do not look like healthy water. That is consistent with a system carrying a heavy nutrient load, where the visible bloom is the surface expression of a broader water quality problem rather than an isolated patch. Cyanobacteria can regulate their buoyancy, rising to the surface for light and sinking for nutrients, which means a bloom can appear and vanish from view within hours without any change in the underlying biomass.
Why blooms happen here
Lake Okeechobee is shallow, large and warm, which is close to an ideal configuration for cyanobacteria. Average depth is only about nine feet across a surface area of roughly 730 square miles, so sunlight penetrates the full water column and summer heat warms it thoroughly. It is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and the second largest wholly within the contiguous United States.
The critical ingredient is nutrients, particularly phosphorus. High phosphorus levels stimulate algae growth, and the lake receives phosphorus from its watershed through agricultural runoff, urban stormwater, septic systems and legacy deposits accumulated in the lake's sediments over decades. That legacy load means the lake can continue to feed blooms even when incoming loads are reduced, because wind mixing in a shallow lake resuspends sediment and returns phosphorus to the water column.
Wind and rain shape how a bloom appears on any given day. Calm, hot conditions allow cyanobacteria to float to the surface and concentrate along downwind shorelines. Wind mixes them back down and disperses mats, which is why satellite coverage estimates can swing substantially from week to week without the underlying biomass changing much. Heavy rain delivers additional nutrients from the watershed while also raising lake levels.
The discharge question
The concern that follows any large Okeechobee bloom is what happens if lake water has to be released. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages lake levels for flood control and dike safety, and when the lake rises toward the upper end of its operating range, the Corps can discharge water east through the St. Lucie Canal toward the Treasure Coast and west through the Caloosahatchee River toward Fort Myers and Sanibel.
Those discharges carry both nutrients and, potentially, algae into the estuaries. The 2018 event that devastated Southwest Florida tourism and fisheries involved that combination, with freshwater discharges from a blooming lake reaching coastal waters where a severe red tide was already underway. Blue-green algae and red tide are different organisms in different environments, cyanobacteria in freshwater and Karenia brevis in salt water, but the nutrient pathway links them.
Corps operations have been governed by an updated lake regulation schedule intended to give managers more flexibility in the timing and volume of releases, including the ability to avoid discharges during periods of heavy bloom coverage where flood control considerations allow. The lake's stage as the season progresses toward the historical peak of hurricane activity will determine how much flexibility managers actually have, since a single tropical system over the watershed can raise the lake by more than a foot.
What it means for Floridians
For residents and visitors near the lake and its connected waterways, the practical guidance is to avoid contact with water that is discolored, scummy or smells strongly. Health officials advise against swimming in or near a visible bloom, keeping pets out of affected water, and washing thoroughly with clean water and soap after any contact. Boaters should be aware that spray from a motor can aerosolize toxins.
Fish caught in bloom-affected water should be handled carefully, with entrails discarded and fillets rinsed with clean water before cooking. Shellfish from affected areas should not be consumed. Anglers and boaters on Okeechobee, one of the country's premier largemouth bass fisheries and a destination that draws tournament traffic from across the Southeast, face both a health question and an access question when ramps and marinas sit in bloom-covered water.
The economic exposure extends well beyond the lake itself. The Caloosahatchee corridor into Lee County and the St. Lucie corridor on the Treasure Coast support fishing guides, marinas, waterfront restaurants, dive operators and vacation rentals. A summer of visible algae is damaging to those businesses even without a full-scale estuary event, because the images circulate and shape booking decisions weeks in advance.
Communities that drink from the system
Several Florida communities draw drinking water from sources connected to the Okeechobee system, and utilities in those areas monitor for cyanotoxins and treat accordingly. Conventional water treatment removes intact cyanobacteria cells effectively, but treatment processes that rupture cells can release toxins into the water, which requires additional treatment steps such as activated carbon.
Utilities in affected areas generally increase sampling frequency during bloom conditions and adjust treatment as needed. Florida does not currently impose a mandatory drinking water standard for microcystin, though federal health advisory levels exist and utilities use them as operational benchmarks.
Residents on private wells in the watershed are outside utility monitoring entirely. Well water is generally drawn from aquifers rather than surface water and is not directly affected by a surface bloom, but shallow wells near surface water bodies warrant more caution.
The longer-term projects
Reducing the frequency and severity of these blooms depends on projects that operate on a scale of years rather than seasons. The Everglades Agricultural Area reservoir, currently under construction south of the lake, is designed to store and treat water so it can move south into the Everglades rather than being discharged east and west, restoring a portion of the historical flow pattern.
Complementary work includes stormwater treatment areas that filter phosphorus from water before it moves downstream, dispersed water management on ranch and farm land that pays landowners to retain water on their property, and Herbert Hoover Dike rehabilitation, which was completed and allows managers to hold water at higher stages without the safety concern that once forced early precautionary releases.
None of this addresses the phosphorus already locked in the lake's sediment, which will continue to fuel blooms for years even under improved watershed management. That is why scientists monitoring the system emphasize that the realistic goal is reducing severity and frequency rather than eliminating blooms entirely.
The 2018 comparison
Any discussion of Okeechobee blooms is measured against 2018, when a severe lake bloom coincided with an unusually persistent red tide along the Gulf coast. Beaches closed, marine life washed ashore in large numbers, and the economic damage to Southwest Florida tourism ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
That event reshaped Florida water policy. It elevated water quality as a statewide political issue, accelerated funding for Everglades restoration projects, and led to changes in how lake discharges are managed. The blue-green algae task force established afterward has continued to advise on nutrient reduction strategy.
Scientists tracking the current bloom have been explicit that they do not currently expect a regional repeat, and the distinction matters. A large lake bloom is a serious water quality problem in its own right without necessarily producing the coastal catastrophe that made 2018 a landmark.
Nutrient sources and who controls them
Phosphorus reaching Lake Okeechobee comes from multiple sources across a watershed that extends north through the Kissimmee River basin toward Orlando. Agricultural operations, cattle ranching, urban stormwater, wastewater treatment discharge and septic systems all contribute in varying proportions depending on location and rainfall.
Regulatory authority is divided among the South Florida Water Management District, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Department of Agriculture and federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers. That division complicates any single-agency solution.
Best management practices programs administered through the agriculture department allow producers to demonstrate compliance through documented practices rather than through direct water quality monitoring at each property. Critics have argued that approach makes it difficult to verify actual nutrient reduction, and that debate has recurred in successive legislative sessions.
What's next
Monitoring will continue through the remainder of the wet season, with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection sampling bloom sites and publishing results, and satellite imagery providing coverage estimates. Lee County and other local governments maintain water quality dashboards that residents can check before heading out on the water.
The lake's stage as hurricane season progresses is the variable to watch. A significant rain event over the watershed would raise levels and narrow the Corps's options, while a dry stretch would give managers room to avoid discharges during heavy bloom coverage. The Atlantic basin is currently quiet, with the National Hurricane Center not expecting tropical formation over the next seven days.
