Atlantic Stays Quiet as Florida Approaches the Peak of Hurricane Season

The Atlantic basin remains unusually quiet as Florida moves toward the climatological peak of hurricane season in early September. The 2026 season has produced two named tropical storms, Arthur and Bertha, and no hurricanes to date. NOAA has maintained its forecast for below-normal activity, calling for 7 to 13 named storms, 2 to 6 hurricanes and 0 to 2 major hurricanes.
What the forecast says
NOAA's updated seasonal outlook assigns a 75 percent probability to below-normal activity, a 20 percent probability to a near-normal season and a 5 percent probability to an above-normal season. That distribution represents an unusually confident seasonal call by the standards of hurricane forecasting.
The named-storm categories carry specific thresholds. A named storm has maximum sustained winds of 39 mph or greater. A hurricane has sustained winds of 74 mph or greater. A major hurricane is Category 3 or above on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 111 mph or greater.
The National Hurricane Center issues a graphical tropical weather outlook covering the next seven days, updated multiple times daily during the season. Recent outlooks have reflected the quiet conditions in the basin.
Why it has been quiet
Several factors have worked against tropical development this summer. The Saharan air layer, a mass of dry dusty air that periodically moves west across the Atlantic from Africa, has been present over Florida and across portions of the basin. Dry air aloft starves developing systems of the moisture they need, and the wind patterns associated with the layer add shear that disrupts organization.
Wind shear, the change in wind speed or direction with height, is generally hostile to tropical cyclones. A developing storm requires a vertically stacked circulation, and shear tilts and ventilates that structure before it can consolidate.
Seasonal outlooks incorporate these factors along with sea surface temperatures and the state of the El Nino Southern Oscillation. Forecasters revise the outlook in early August, and NOAA's decision to maintain rather than adjust the below-normal call reflects continued alignment between the observed environment and the pre-season expectation.
Why a quiet season is not a safe season
The most important caveat in seasonal forecasting is that storm counts do not predict landfalls. A season can produce a large number of storms that all recurve harmlessly into the open Atlantic, and a season can produce very few storms of which one strikes Florida directly.
Florida's history supplies the examples. Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida in August 1992 during a season that produced only seven named storms, well below average. That storm remains among the most destructive in United States history.
The National Hurricane Center and state emergency managers repeatedly emphasize that preparation should be identical regardless of seasonal outlook, because the relevant question for any household is not how many storms form but whether one reaches their county.
What the peak period means
The Atlantic season runs June 1 through Nov. 30, but activity is heavily concentrated. Climatologically, the sharpest ramp occurs from mid-August through mid-September, with Sept. 10 conventionally cited as the statistical peak.
Florida's own landfall climatology skews toward this window and extends into October, when late-season systems that form in the western Caribbean can track north into the Gulf. Several of the state's most damaging recent storms have arrived in September and October.
That timing means Florida is now entering rather than exiting its period of highest risk, notwithstanding the season's quiet start.
Watches, warnings and evacuation orders
Three distinctions matter when a system does threaten. A tropical storm or hurricane watch means conditions are possible within the specified area, generally within 48 hours. A warning means conditions are expected, generally within 36 hours. The gap between the two is the window in which preparations should be completed, not begun.
Evacuation orders in Florida are issued by county emergency management officials, not by the National Hurricane Center, and they are zone-specific. An evacuation order for a county does not mean every resident of that county must leave. Zones are drawn primarily by storm surge vulnerability and by structure type, and residents should know their evacuation zone before a storm rather than looking it up during one.
Storm surge is the leading cause of hurricane fatalities. The National Hurricane Center issues separate storm surge watches and warnings with their own inundation graphics, and those products often cover areas beyond the wind-based warnings.
What Floridians should do now
The quiet period is the right time to prepare. Emergency managers recommend confirming evacuation zone, identifying a destination and route, assembling supplies for at least seven days including water, non-perishable food, medications, batteries and cash, and documenting property condition with photographs for insurance purposes.
Insurance is a Florida-specific consideration. Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage, and separate flood coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier typically carries a 30-day waiting period before taking effect. That waiting period means a policy purchased when a storm is already forecast will not cover that storm.
The NFIP's authorization expires Sept. 30, adding a further complication for Florida property owners. A lapse would prevent new policies from being written, though existing policies would remain in force through their terms.
How seasonal forecasts are built
Seasonal hurricane outlooks are statistical products rather than deterministic forecasts. They combine sea surface temperature patterns across the tropical Atlantic, the state of the El Nino Southern Oscillation, West African monsoon strength, and historical analog seasons that resembled current conditions.
El Nino conditions in the Pacific typically increase wind shear over the Atlantic, suppressing hurricane activity. La Nina conditions typically reduce that shear, enhancing it. The strength and timing of those Pacific patterns is among the most heavily weighted inputs into any Atlantic seasonal forecast.
The outputs are probability ranges rather than point predictions for exactly that reason. NOAA's 7 to 13 named storm range with a 75 percent probability of below-normal activity expresses genuine uncertainty rather than hedging.
What Florida has learned from recent seasons
Florida has absorbed multiple billion-dollar storms over the past decade, and the lessons emergency managers cite most often concern inland flooding and post-storm recovery rather than wind alone.
Storms that weaken rapidly after landfall can still produce catastrophic freshwater flooding hundreds of miles inland, and Florida's flat topography and high water table mean drainage is slow. Counties well removed from any coastline have experienced severe flooding from tropical systems.
Power restoration has been another recurring lesson. Florida's utilities pre-position crews and mutual aid resources before landfall, but restoration in heavily damaged areas takes days to weeks, and households dependent on electricity for medical equipment need plans that do not assume rapid restoration.
Preparing a household in a quiet week
Emergency managers consistently emphasize that supplies purchased in August are cheaper, more available and less stressful to acquire than supplies purchased during a warning. Store shelves empty within hours of an evacuation order, and fuel availability along evacuation routes deteriorates quickly.
A basic kit covers water at one gallon per person per day for seven days, non-perishable food, a manual can opener, flashlights, batteries, a battery or crank radio, first aid supplies, prescription medications, cash in small bills, and copies of insurance and identification documents in a waterproof container.
Special needs registries exist in every Florida county for residents who require assistance evacuating or who depend on electrically powered medical equipment. Registration takes place through county emergency management and should be completed in advance rather than during an event.
Insurance and documentation before a storm
Beyond flood coverage and its 30-day waiting period, Florida homeowners should understand their hurricane deductible, which is typically expressed as a percentage of insured value rather than a flat dollar amount and can therefore be substantial.
Photographic documentation of property condition before a storm materially improves claim outcomes. Insurers and public adjusters consistently advise homeowners to photograph interiors, exteriors, roofs where safely accessible, and major contents, and to store those images somewhere accessible if the home is damaged.
Policy documents, agent contact information and claim filing procedures should be recorded somewhere retrievable without power or internet access. Households that discover after a storm that they cannot reach their carrier lose days at the front of the claim process.
Why storm names matter and where they come from
The World Meteorological Organization maintains six rotating lists of Atlantic storm names, used in sequence and recycled every six years. Names of especially destructive storms are retired and replaced, which is why Andrew, Katrina, Michael and Ian will never be reused.
The 2026 list began with Arthur and Bertha, the two systems that have formed so far. A season that ends with only a handful of names used leaves most of the list unused until it cycles back.
Naming exists for communication rather than science. A named system is easier for the public, emergency managers and media to track than a numbered depression, particularly when multiple systems are active simultaneously. The National Hurricane Center assigns a name once a tropical depression strengthens to sustained winds of 39 mph.
The rest of the Gulf and Caribbean picture
Florida faces threats from two directions, and the sources behave differently. Cape Verde systems form off West Africa, cross the open Atlantic over one to two weeks and approach from the east, giving forecasters and residents the longest lead time available.
Systems forming in the western Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico develop closer to land and can reach Florida within days rather than weeks. Those homegrown storms are historically more common later in the season, and October storms in particular have often formed in the western Caribbean before tracking north.
That seasonal shift means the character of Florida's risk changes through the fall. August and September threats tend to arrive with more warning; October threats can develop and strike with comparatively little.
What's next
The National Hurricane Center's tropical weather outlook is the authoritative source for basin conditions and updates through the season. The Florida Division of Emergency Management coordinates state-level preparation and response and publishes county-level guidance.
Seasonal outlooks are not updated again before the season's end, but forecasters will continue to track individual systems as they develop. The peak of the season runs through September, and the basin can transition from quiet to active in a matter of days.
