NASA's Roman Space Telescope Cleared for Sunday Launch From Kennedy Space Center

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is cleared for launch Sunday morning from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, riding a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Agency and SpaceX officials completed the Launch Readiness Review on Friday and declared the mission go for flight, with liftoff scheduled for 7:26 a.m. Eastern.

Who Nancy Grace Roman was
The observatory's name honors an astronomer whose influence on American space science is difficult to overstate and who spent much of her career making the case for orbital telescopes before one existed.
Roman joined NASA in 1959 and became the agency's first chief astronomer, a position from which she shaped the early space astronomy program. She was among the first women to hold an executive role at the agency.
Her advocacy for a large orbital telescope, sustained across years when the concept faced skepticism about cost and feasibility, is the reason she is widely described as the mother of the Hubble Space Telescope. She worked to build support among astronomers, within NASA, and in Congress for a program that would take decades to realize.
Hubble launched in 1990 and fundamentally changed observational astronomy, and Roman lived to see it operate for nearly three decades. She died in 2018.
Naming the agency's next wide field observatory for her connects an instrument designed to survey enormous volumes of sky to the person who argued that observing from above the atmosphere was worth the effort in the first place.
