Florida Cyclospora Cases Top 500 in Lettuce-Linked Outbreak

Florida has recorded more than 500 confirmed and probable cases of cyclosporiasis so far in 2026, according to Florida Department of Health surveillance reporting, making it one of the states most affected by a multistate outbreak that federal investigators have linked to imported iceberg lettuce. The state's count stood at 486 as of late August and crossed the 500 threshold in the reporting period ending in early September.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It spreads through contaminated food or water rather than from person to person, which means outbreaks typically trace back to a specific produce item or supply chain rather than to community transmission.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a health advisory covering domestically acquired cases in multiple states, and the agency has identified iceberg lettuce produced in central Mexico as the suspected source.
Where the Florida cases are concentrated
State surveillance data shows the cases distributed across much of Florida, with the heaviest concentrations in the most populous counties. Miami-Dade County has reported the largest number, followed by Broward County. Lee County has emerged as the focal point in Southwest Florida.
Case counts rose sharply through the summer. Reporting in early August documented a surge of nearly 100 new cases in a single week, and additional increases followed through the month. Federal investigators traced the outbreak to iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico. Taylor Farms de Mexico, a supplier, recalled all iceberg lettuce sourced from the affected region. That product had been distributed to restaurants and retailers in the United States, including outlets associated with major chains.
Recalls of this kind are complicated by the short shelf life of fresh produce. By the time an outbreak is traced and a recall issued, most of the implicated product has typically already been consumed or discarded, which limits how much illness a recall can prevent going forward.
What cyclosporiasis does
The illness typically begins about a week after a person consumes contaminated food, though the incubation period can range wider. The most common symptom is watery diarrhea, often prolonged, accompanied by loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Some patients report a low-grade fever.

Industry groups on the other side note that outbreaks have also been traced to domestic production and that the relevant variable is growing and handling practice rather than country of origin.

Emergency departments and urgent care centers across Florida's metropolitan areas absorb much of the initial presentation, often before the prolonged course that distinguishes the illness has become apparent. A patient seen on day three of symptoms looks like many other patients seen that day.
Once identified, treatment is straightforward and effective, which is why the diagnostic step carries so much weight. The 740 hospitalizations reported nationally since May represent cases where illness became severe enough to require inpatient care.
Prevention within reach
Because washing does not reliably remove Cyclospora, consumer-level prevention options are limited, but not absent. Cooking destroys the parasite, so cooked vegetables carry no risk from this pathogen. Households concerned about exposure during an active outbreak can shift toward cooked preparations for implicated items.
Checking recall notices remains the most actionable step. The Food and Drug Administration and the Florida Department of Health both publish recall information, and grocery chains typically post notices at point of sale and notify loyalty program members who purchased affected items.
For restaurants and institutional food service, supplier verification is the operative control. Establishments serving schools, hospitals and long-term care facilities face heightened stakes given the populations they serve.
Public health officials emphasize that the overall risk to any individual Floridian remains low, and that fresh produce continues to be an important part of a healthy diet even during an active outbreak affecting one specific item.
