Florida State Sweeps Miami in Season-Ending College Baseball Rivalry Weekend

Florida State took two of three games against rival Miami at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee from May 14 through May 16, closing the regular season with a 37-15 overall record and an 18-10 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Seminoles' weekend opened with a 7-6 victory on Thursday night, followed by an 11-1 run-rule win on Friday, before Miami salvaged the third game with a 7-4 victory on Saturday afternoon to avoid a sweep.
The series win pushed Florida State into the second seed for the ACC Baseball Championship that begins May 20 at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Seminoles' final record of 37-15 represents the program's highest win total in head coach Link Jarrett's third season and the most regular-season wins for any Florida State baseball team since the 2019 campaign. The 18-10 conference record placed FSU one game behind Clemson for the ACC regular-season title.
For Miami, the weekend ended a 28-27 regular season that fell short of NCAA Tournament projections. The Hurricanes entered the year ranked No. 11 in the Baseball America preseason poll but struggled with pitching depth throughout the spring. The series-ending loss likely closes Miami out of the NCAA Tournament field, though head coach J.D. Arteaga's program will await the selection show on May 25 with hope for a last-bid berth as one of the field's final at-large selections.
Thursday: A One-Run Opener
The series opened on Thursday night at Dick Howser Stadium with Florida State scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome a 6-3 deficit. Right fielder James Tibbs III drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single down the right-field line that scored shortstop Cam Smith. Smith had reached on a walk and advanced to second on a Daniel Cantu single before scoring on the Tibbs hit. The rally was capped by an insurance run on a Jaime Ferrer double that gave the Seminoles a 7-6 lead heading into the eighth inning.
Florida State starter Jamie Arnold worked five innings of four-run baseball, allowing seven hits and walking two. The junior left-hander gave up two-run home runs to Miami catcher Carlos Perez in the third inning and Miami designated hitter Dorian Gonzalez Jr. in the fifth. Arnold's outing pushed his ERA to 3.18 for the season and his strikeout total to 96 across 71 innings, both top-five marks in the ACC.
The Florida State bullpen handled the final four innings without allowing a run. Right-hander Jackson Nezuh worked two innings in relief, striking out four. Junior right-hander Cam Leiter finished the game with a two-inning save, his sixth of the season. The win improved Florida State to 36-14 overall and 17-9 in conference play.
Friday: A Run-Rule Demolition
The Friday night game ended in seven innings under the NCAA's 10-run rule, with Florida State winning 11-1 behind a complete-game effort from right-hander Conner Whittaker. The Seminoles scored five runs in the first inning to chase Miami starter Gage Ziehl after he recorded just two outs, then added three more in the second inning to build a 8-0 lead.
The first-inning rally began with Marco Dinges working a leadoff walk and advancing to second on a Tibbs single. Smith followed with a three-run home run to left-center field on the first pitch he saw from Ziehl, a 396-foot drive that cleared the bullpen. The Seminoles added two more runs on a Drew Faurot double and an Alex Lodise single before Ziehl was removed from the game.
Whittaker, the Seminoles' Friday starter for most of the season, worked all seven innings while allowing one run on three hits. The right-hander struck out 10 and walked one in what was his longest outing of the year. The complete game was the second of Whittaker's career and the first by a Florida State pitcher in a conference game since 2023. His season ERA dropped to 2.94 with the performance, third-lowest among ACC starters with at least 75 innings.
Smith's home run was his 17th of the season and pushed his RBI total to 64, both team highs. The junior shortstop, who is projected as a top-10 selection in the 2026 MLB Draft, has hit safely in 22 consecutive games and is batting .342 for the season. His .448 on-base percentage and .658 slugging percentage rank among the top five in the ACC.
Saturday: Miami Avoids the Sweep
Miami salvaged the series finale on Saturday afternoon with a 7-4 victory that featured a four-run sixth-inning rally. Hurricanes designated hitter Dorian Gonzalez Jr. drove in two runs with a double down the left-field line that scored Jacob Jablonski and Antonio Jimenez. Catcher Carlos Perez added a two-run home run later in the inning, his third of the series, to provide the margin Miami needed.
Florida State right-hander Joey Volini took the loss, allowing six runs across six innings of work. The junior, who entered the start with a 3.65 ERA, was undone by the sixth-inning rally and walked a season-high four batters. He fell to 4-3 on the season with the result, though his strikeout total of 84 across 76 innings remained among the team leaders.
Miami left-hander Brian Walters worked seven innings of two-run baseball to earn the win and improve his record to 6-4. The junior allowed six hits and struck out eight, his longest outing since early April. The Hurricanes' bullpen retired five of the final six batters faced to seal the win and avoid the series sweep. Closer Brad Kropp recorded the final three outs for his ninth save of the season.
Smith Builds a Resume
Smith's series performance reinforced his standing as one of the top prospects in the 2026 MLB Draft. The junior shortstop went 6-for-12 in the three games with three doubles, one home run, and seven runs batted in. His Saturday performance included a fourth-inning solo home run, his 18th of the season, and an eighth-inning single that drove in two runs to pull Florida State within three.
His full-season numbers place him among the top hitters in college baseball. Smith ranks third in the ACC in batting average at .342, second in on-base percentage at .448, and second in slugging at .658. His 18 home runs are tied for the team lead with Tibbs, and his 64 RBIs lead the conference. His defensive metrics at shortstop have also been strong, with a .965 fielding percentage and 14 defensive runs saved according to the program's internal analytics.
Several draft publications have placed Smith in the top 10 of the 2026 MLB Draft, with some projections ranking him as high as the No. 4 overall pick. His combination of contact ability, power, and defensive value at shortstop has made him one of the most well-rounded college position players in the class. According to the team's media-relations release, Smith has declined to discuss draft positioning during the regular season and has focused exclusively on the team's postseason work.
Jarrett's Take on the Weekend
Jarrett addressed the series in a postgame statement issued through the team's media relations staff. According to that release, the head coach said the series win demonstrated the Seminoles' depth and their ability to win in different ways across three games. He praised Whittaker's Friday performance as one of the most-dominant pitching outings of the season and acknowledged that the Saturday loss illustrated the importance of consistent execution heading into the ACC Tournament.
Jarrett, who took over the Florida State program before the 2024 season after head coaching stints at Notre Dame and UNC Greensboro, has rebuilt the Seminoles into a perennial NCAA Tournament contender. His three-year run in Tallahassee includes a College World Series appearance in 2024 and a regional host designation in 2025. The 2026 season's 37-15 mark already represents the program's strongest regular-season finish under his direction.
According to the release, Jarrett also confirmed the Seminoles' weekend rotation for the ACC Tournament. Arnold will start the team's opener against the No. 7 seed on Wednesday, May 21, with Whittaker scheduled for a Friday start if the team advances. The bullpen will be led by Leiter and Nezuh in high-leverage situations, with sophomore right-hander Conor Hartigan available for long-relief and weekend starts later in the tournament.
What the Series Means for Both Programs
The series win locks in Florida State as the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament and projects the Seminoles as a top-eight national seed for the NCAA Tournament. A top-eight national seed would guarantee Florida State the right to host both a regional and, if successful, a super regional at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles last hosted a super regional in 2024, when they defeated Connecticut to advance to the College World Series.
For Miami, the loss likely closes the Hurricanes out of the NCAA Tournament field. The program would need a deep ACC Tournament run, beginning with at least three wins as the No. 9 seed, to enter the tournament conversation. Miami has not missed the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive years since the late 1970s, and Arteaga's roster will face significant turnover this summer with several juniors expected to enter the MLB Draft.
The state of Florida's other college baseball programs will also be watching the selection show closely. The Florida Gators are projected as a top-eight national seed alongside Florida State, raising the possibility of two Florida programs hosting NCAA regionals. The University of Central Florida and Florida Atlantic University are also bubble teams for the field of 64 announced on May 25.
What's Next at the ACC Tournament
The Seminoles open ACC Tournament play on Wednesday, May 21, at 11 a.m. ET against the winner of a Tuesday play-in game between the conference's seventh and 10th seeds. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network and held at Truist Field in Charlotte. The Seminoles' bracket includes potential matchups against North Carolina State and Wake Forest before a possible semifinal against Clemson.
According to the team's pre-tournament release, Florida State plans to use Arnold in the opener with the goal of getting at least six innings from the left-hander. Whittaker would start the second game if the Seminoles advance to Friday play. The team's bullpen depth gives Jarrett flexibility to use a bullpen game in the third tournament outing if the team advances that far, with the goal of preserving the rotation for a potential weekend run.
The NCAA Tournament selection show is set for May 25 at noon ET on ESPN2, with the 64-team bracket announced over the following 90 minutes. Regional play begins on May 29 and continues through June 1, with super regionals slated for June 5 through June 8. The College World Series in Omaha begins on June 13 and runs through the championship series in late June. Florida State's strongest team since 2019 will enter the postseason with a meaningful chance to return to Omaha for the second time in three years.
